Mobile Toy Library

The Mobile Toy Library, a project of Ruchika Social Services Organization is a colorful bus full of toys and educational material that drives to slums of Bhubaneswar, India and stops where the children can come and play with the toys. The Mobile Toy Library also has a librarian who travels with the bus and works with the children. 0 million children in India are forced to live and work on the streets. Many children work to help support their families, while others are orphans. These children scrape by doing many varied menial jobs such as sweeping, selling newspapers, running errands, or shining shoes. With funds already so tight, most of these children cannot afford to go to school. Slums across India are filled with children looking for food and work. Homelessness and street life have extremely detrimental effects on children. Their unstable lifestyles, poor living conditions, and lack of medical care make children more likely to have chronic illnesses such as respiratory or ear infections and HIV/AIDS

A Library by Workers for their Library

A musty 8x 10 room in EWS Colony (Economically Weaker Section) is an unlikely place for a library. But this library, set up by the Textile Mazdoor Union in Ludhiana about three months ago, is already a hit with the colony's children. The library has issued and re-issued 1,200 books to children of the area ever since it was set up. While some of the books have been donated by Deshbhagat Yadgaari Society, Jalandhar, the rest have been contributed by the union. A few books have come from anonymous donors. The library has rows of shelves lined with books written by Premchand, Leo Tolstoy, Mitarsen Meet and Karl Marx. The books are mainly in Hindi and Punjabi. The children's section has story books, picture books and math puzzle books of the National Book Trust. Rajwinder Singh, a union member and the brain behind this library, says, "Workers are often thought of as being illiterates. Though many of them are illiterate, there are some who have cleared class X and XII. And even if they want to read something, there is no place they can go to. We have about 600 books in our library. We don't have an elaborate seating arrangement, but we will be happy if we manage to get our workers and their children into the habit of reading. The response has been good so far." Gautam, a casual worker, says, "I used to come to this library to read newspapers. Now I also read Lalkar, a magazine for workers." Visitors to the library sit on the floor and a register maintains a record of the books issued. The colony's children are regular visitors. "The children are mainly interested in reading story books with pictures and Tarksheel Society, a rationalists' body, has donated us a few books on how we must fight superstitions. The children learn Punjabi in school so they have books in Punjabi and Hindi," says Rajwinder Singh.

Children's Own Library

A reading space for, of and by children wins an award While libraries in the city are struggling to sustain themselves with the advent of the Internet, e-books and podcasts, a library in a village can still prove a crucial window to the world beyond. The children's library started by Child Rights Trust (CRT) Chagalatti village, situated eight kilometres from the International Airport, is proof of how a library can broaden a child's world. That it is managed entirely by the children of the village is an additional feather in its cap. Top of the heap The library was last week given an award by the Hippocampus Reading Foundation (HRF) as the “best library in a community centre”. The foundation has also donated a large number of English books to the library and trained children in library maintenance. Various genres Chagalatti village (called “chocolate” by its residents!) is the only library within a 15-km radius, explains Nagasimha Rao of CRT. It has over 1,700 books in English and Kannada, covering a wide variety of genres including fiction, non-fiction and reference books.

Knowledge Mapping

Knowlwdge Mapping is one of the popular Technique tro identify the flow of knowledge in any Organization. It helps Decision Makers in taking Decicions. Knowledge Assets like Persons, Processes, Content, Resources, and Technology can be identified within the organization.
Explain that the purpose of the activity is to organize and practice the lesson content and test comprehension by generating a Knowledge Map.
Divide students into small groups or pairs if desired.
Inform students of the topic of the Knowledge Map.
Have students generate a Knowledge Map for the given topic.
Have students present their Knowledge Maps. If small groups or partners created the Knowledge Maps, students may present to the class or exchange maps with another small group or a partner.
Provide feedback.
Present the model version of the Knowledge Map.
Lead the class in a discussion of the similarities and differences between the student versions of the Knowledge Map and the model version.
Summarize the results of the activity.

COpyright Fight

BASANT KUMAR MOHANTY New Delhi, March 13: More than 300 academics from universities across the globe, including Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, have lashed out against foreign publishers who are trying to stop students in India from photocopying their books. Publishers like Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press and Taylor & Francis Group have moved Delhi High Court alleging illegal reproduction of study materials from their books. They have alleged that Rameshwari Photocopier, a licensed photocopy shop at Delhi School of Economics (DSE), was bringing out course packs by reproducing study materials taken from their books without authorisation. The high court has given a stay order on the DSE campus photocopier till the next hearing on April 25. A total of 309 professors from institutions like Stanford University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Johns Hopkins University, Cambridge University, University of California, University of Warwick, University of Singapore, Delhi University, University of Chicago, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, IIT Bombay and Massachusetts Institute of Technology have issued an open letter to these publishers supporting students’ right to access authors’ work through photocopying. “As authors and educators, we would like to place on record our distress at this act of the publishers, as we recognise the fact that in a country like India marked by sharp economic inequalities, it is often not possible for every student to obtain a personal copy of a book,” the letter said. An ideal option is that multiple copies of the book should be available in the library so that students are able to access these books without any difficulty. But given the constraints that libraries in India work with, they may only have a single copy of a book and in many instances, none at all. Of the 309 signatories, 33 are authors whose works are included in the “course packs”. Among the 33 are some leading academics like professors Thomas Blom Hansen, Partha Chatterjee, Ayesha Jalal, Christophe Jaffrelot, Veena Das, Pratap Bhanu Mehta and Marc Galanter. Sen has expressed his disappointment with the law suit in a separate letter. The publishers have argued that photocopy shops were making business by illegally reproducing from their books. The “course packs”, which are collection of materials from different books, cannot be treated as personal use, they have said. The academicians have not agreed with the publishers’ claim that they suffer financial loss because of photocopying. “Given the pricing strategy followed by publishers, we do not believe that students are the primary market for these books and hence it would be disingenuous to presume that every photocopied article or book would be a lost sale,” the letter said. They argued that most academics are able to write books because they are supported by public infrastructure and funds, hinting that they were not dependent on royalties alone. They also said their work was often a product of research or project funded by the government or institutions. So, the profits of the academic publishing houses are under-written by tax-payers’ money, they argued. They also said that bringing out course packs is allowed under the Copyright Act. Section 52(1)(a) of the Act provides for a fair dealing with any work for the purposes of private or personal use, including research. Students of Delhi University, who have formed the Association of Students for Equitable Access to Knowledge, have cited the two letters in their campaign against the publishers. The ASEAK has asked the court to make it a party to the case filed by the publishers.

Library use of E Books
DUBLIN--()--Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/dc56vs/library_use_of) has announced the addition of the "Library Use of eBooks, 2013 Edition" report to their offering.
This 103-page study is based on data from 68 public, academic, corporate, legal and government libraries, with data broken out by type of library, size of library and other criteria. The study paints a portrait of how libraries are using eBooks and covers spending, budgets, contracts, licensing, number of licenses maintained, and aggregator and publisher preferences and aggregator vs publisher sales as a percentage of total eBook spending. The report also presents detailed data on library spending on particular retail vendors such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble and all other online book vendors. The report also presents data on e-audio books, use of consortium purchasing arrangements for eBooks, the impact of eBooks on interlibrary loan, range of titles typically available for eBook rental at libraries, the impact of tablets and other eBook reading devices, the impact of eBooks on course reserves for higher education libraries, the evolving state of dedicated endowments for eBooks, use of and spending on eDirectories, trends in eBook pricing as experienced by libraries, trends in eBook collection planning, use of eTextbooks and more.
Just a few of the report's many findings are that:
- Spending on e-textbooks will increase from a mean of $1,042 in 2012 to approximately $1,528 in 2013 for the libraries in the sample
- Public libraries have spent a mean of $8,750 on electronic and internet versions of directories
- Libraries in the sample expect to renew almost 75 percent of their current e=book contracts upon completion
- 37.13 percent of e-book orders made by libraries in the sample are placed with e-book divisions of traditional book jobbers or distributors
- On average, libraries in the sample have experienced a mean increase of 17.93 percent in the price of e-books in the last year

How librarians can help widen access to research – live chat round-up

From access to data, resources to support, our panel's thoughts on how librarians are influencing the dissemination of research

Ann Rossiter, executive director of Society of College, National and University Libraries (SCONUL)

Research discoverability is important. One of the main challenges for the library community is how we can collaborate to ensure the research that is increasingly being deposited in institutional repositories is discoverable to users. Not easy, but important.
Open access is a worry. We're going to have to pay twice, for subscriptions and for article processing charges. We are going to need the backing of the academic community to make sure that this doesn't happen.A real win would be to pay a more reasonable price for journals – prices are going up much faster than inflation.
Article Processing Charges are not a bad thing in themselves. There's lots we can do to track costs. I can understand academics' concerns about the relative costs of APCs being used to pressure researchers at the start of their careers to publish in less prestigious journals – I wouldn't want to see that happen. But at least if academics know a little bit more about the economics of this, they can make informed decisions about which publishers / journals are behaving reasonably (or not).
