Types of Bibliometrics

Bibliometrics offers a powerful set of methods and measures for studying the structure and process of scholarly communication. Citation analysis, the best known of bibliometric approaches, has become more sophisticated, and the advent of networked information technologies has led to quantitative and qualitative advances in other bibliometric methods. Bibliometrics is the application of mathematical and statistical methods to publications (from biblos: book and metron: measurement). Bibliometrics is often used to assess scientific research through quantitative studies on research publications. Bibliometric assessments are based on the assumption that most scientific discoveries and research results eventually are published in international scientific journals where they can be read and citedby other researchers. The number of citations to a journal article can be considered to reflect the article’s impact on the scientific community. Applied bibliometrics, as it is used today, analyzes the number of scientific articles published by a selected number of authors, citations to these articles and connections between articles, authors and Read more http://ki.se/content/1/c6/01/79/31/Introduction_to_bibliometrics_v1.11.pdf http://www.gslis.utexas.edu/~landc/fulltext/LandC_34_4_Herubel.pdf http://www.norslis.net/2004/Bib_Module_KUL.pdf

Bibliometrics

Bibliometrics is a type of research method used in library and information science. It utilizes quantitative analysis and statistics to describe patterns of publication within a given field or body of literature. Researchers may use bibliometric methods of evaluation to determine the influence of a single writer, for example, or to describe the relationship between two or more writers or works. One common way of conducting bibliometric research is to use the Social Science Citation Index, the Science Citation Index or the Arts and Humanities Citation Index to trace citations Why is bibliometrics important? The Research Quality Framework is likely to use some form of bibliometrics to measure quality. National and international university ranking tables use bibliometrics. For both of these reasons, and for internal strategic planning purposes our universities are increasingly turning to bibliometrics to understand research performance. What’s bibliometrics got to do with us? Bibliometrics is fundamentally, although not exclusively, a library science. We subscribe to the main citation indexes, or will be asked to subscribe to, or provide advice about, them. Many of us are being asked to contribute to our institution’s s RQF preparations. Many of us are involved with open access initiatives that are intended to have an impact on citation rates.

What is Research

Research is Creation of New Knowledge Research can be categorised into three distinct types: basic, strategic and applied. Basic, or blue-sky research, is the pursuit of new knowledge without anyassumptions about what it might lead to – essentially knowledge for its own sake. Strategic research is the pursuit of new knowledge which might, in principle, have a practical application but without a precise view of the timescale or nature of the application. Applied research is knowledge which is developed with a specific objective in mind, particularly the conversion of existing knowledge into products, processes and technologies. strategic research create pools of expertise and knowledge which benefit in many ways. Applied research may be the stage in which collaboration with industry is most likely, but basic and here. The timescales over which research takes place vary greatly. Sometimes a specific piece of research might only last a few months or even less, while at other times research may take decades to develop knowledge in a specific area. There may be an early breakthrough in a piece of research but a further, lengthy period before this is refined. Alternatively, it may take years of exploration before a breakthrough is made. Sometimes the result is entirely different from (but potentially as valuable as) the one being sought. It is important to realise that there is no simple ‘model’ of how research should work, and every piece of research will follow its own path. Often people think of research in terms of science and technology, but research takes place in every area of academic study. Often people think of research in terms of science and technology, but research takes place in every area of academic study A LIBRARIAN'S DEFINITION ResearchResearch is a process of investigation. An examination of a subject from different points of view. It's not just a trip to the library to pick up a stack of materials, or picking the first five hits from a computer search. Research is a hunt for the truth. It is getting to know a subject
  • by reading up on it,
  • reflecting,
  • playing with the ideas,
  • choosing the areas that interest you and following up on them.

Research is the way you educate yourself. It can be dull if you make it that way. Or, it can be as exciting as 'The X Files.'

Research is a process through which we attempt to achieve systematically and with the support of data the answer to a question, the resolution of a problem, or a greater understanding of a phenomenon. This process, which is frequently called research methodology, has eight distinct characteristics:

CHARACTERISTICS OF RESEARCH

  • Research originates with a question or problem.
  • Research requires a clear articulation of a goal.
  • Research follows a specific plan of procedure.
  • Research usually divides the principal problem into more manageable subproblems.
  • Research is guided by the specific research problem, question, or hypothesis.
  • Research accepts certain critical assumptions.
  • Research requires the collection and interpretation of data in attempting to resolve the problem that initiated the research.
  • Research is, by its nature, cyclical; or more exactly, helical.

INDIAN Resources for Library Research Information

The 'University News' is a weekly journal carrying a variety of articles on different aspects of higher education. While some of them are of factual nature and local interest, others delineate current national and global thinking. A proper appreciation of various problems of higher education is facilitated if articles on a given theme are read together. The Association has introduced a new series "Selections from University News" in which articles on similar themes are brought together. Available in Print it has columns in each of its weekly issues called "Thesis of the Month" in which the Thesis awarded in All the Faculties are listed. LISGateway.com provides searchable and browsable catalogue of Internet based resources related to Library & Information Science. It encourages the exploitation of publishers material by providing free access to quality web resources LISGateway VIDYANIDHI Vidyanidhi (Meaning 'Treasure of Knowledge' in Sanskrit) is India's premier Digital library initiative to facilitate the creation, archiving and accessing of doctoral theses. Vidyanidhi is an information infrastructure, a digital library, a portal of resources, tools and facilities for doctoral research in India. Vidyanidhi is envisioned to evolve as a national repository and a consortium for e-theses through participation and partnership with universities, academic institutions and other stake holders. Vidyanidhi enhances access to Indian theses and enlarges the reach and audience for Indian doctoral research works. INFLIBNET Development of Union databases of Indian University Libraries is one of the major activities of INFLIBNET. One of the important Database developed by INFLIBNET is THESES Database, which is available online (free) at INFLIBNET Theses database of INFLIBNET has over one and half lakh records of the doctoral dissertations submitted to the Indian universities in all disiplines. The bibliographical details like researcher, title of the thesis, guides), university name, department name, subjects), year of award etc are provided. This is the only one online tool available to find out the research out put of Indian Universities. This data has been contributed by the universities and does not cover the abstracts at present

Due to the plethora of electronic sources available, this guide is limited to approximately ten resources for each category. Most of these resources are freely available; those which are restricted to the BC Community are identified. Print resources in the area of Library Science are not listed here; they are all cataloged and available through the Boston College online catalog. Additional information and guidance is available from the Subject Specialist for Library Science, Pamela A. Perry http://www.bc.edu/libraries/research/guides/s-libscience/ http://www.emporia.edu/esrs/vol43/afzal.pdf This paper examines library and information science (LIS) literature as produced and published by researchers in Africa in order to establish the productivity and impact of LIS research in the region. Using publication counts, and more specifically, citation analysis, the paper demonstrates that the research output and impact of LIS on the continent is relatively low when compared to other disciplines in Africa, such as social sciences. Correspondingly, the research forms a small percentage of both the national and world total LIS research output. A comparison of countries indicates that South Africa presently leads in terms of both research output and citations, and Nigeria and South Africa account for over 70% of the total number of Africa’s publications and citations. Other findings are discussed, in addition to recommendations for further research, and ways in which to improve the visibility of LIS research in Africa. http://www.ifla.org/IV/ifla73/papers/132-Onyancha-en.pdf

Introduction to Research in India

The current study has been taken up to fulfill the dire necessity to compile a comprehensive bibliographic list of all Doctoral Dissertations awarded and research in progress by the Indian Universities in Library and Information science. The necessity was felt while working on a research proposal for M.Phil to finalize a research topic when I discovered the paucity of a compilation or a publication showing the exact research thesis available. Dissertations are considered as Grey literature and primary source of information. Therefore, these documents are important for the growth of a discipline as they encapsulate formal and refined form of research and hold a mirror to the present position and trends in the discipline. It is therefore; quite imperative that these documents be by no means confined to the four walls of the University where in it is submitted to earn the degree. Very few publications which are having limited information are brought out, which, if documented properly, read more

Research in Library and Information Science in India:1985-2005

The productivity count of the Doctoral Theses is made and analyzed to draw conclusions. The study is also presenting the scatter nature of literature in the sub fields of Library and Information Science. The counting technique of Bibliometrics has been used to prepare the tables and graphs. The data collected from different sources is classified, grouped and analyzed to find out its various dimensions. The data has been analyzed in the following formats: 1. University wise analysis of the Theses shows the number of Theses awarded in different universities. 2. Guide wise analyses of the Theses analyzes and show the number of Theses supervised by a given guide under different Universities. 3. State wise analysis of the Theses awarded shows the analysis of the Theses contributed by different states in the country for the development of the Library and Information Science profession. 4. Subject wise analysis is made based on the broad subjects being covered in the dissertation titles. An attempt will be made to show the areas of concentration of the LIS research and the areas, which has not been touched or lack research activity is there in the Indian universities. It will also specify the areas needed to be concentrated for future research in Library and Information Science. the collected data has also been analysed in the following manner RANKING the first ten ranking universities awarding more than 15 doctoral degrees during 1985-2005 Karnataka is ranking first with 57 degrees to its credit then followed by Jiwaji University with 40 doctoral degrees to its credit. Andhra University stands third with 35 degrees and University of Rajasthan and Punjab University share the same rank with 28 doctoral degrees awarded by each of them. The University of Delhi and Utkal University with 21 doctoral degrees awarded by each of them are in the fifth place. The University of Madras stands sixth in the ranking followed by Osmania University in the seventh place with 20 and 19 degrees awarded respectively. University of Mysore is in eighth place with 18, Bangalore and Jadhavpur Universities share the ninth rank with 17 degrees awarded by each. And the tenth rank is given to Gulbarga University with just 16 degrees awarded so far. LANGUAGE 96 percent of the doctoral degrees submitted to all the Indian universities are in English. 3.33% of the total doctoral degrees submitted are in Hindi i.e. only 21 degrees out of 630. In Bengali 0.31 percent and 0.15 percent each in Gujrati and Marathi are awarded. Such a trend of awarding doctoral degrees is seen only in the northern states of India. There are no doctoral degrees awarded in the regional languages of southern India and northeastern regions. Though not many degrees are awarded in Hindi but it is clear that Hindi the national language is the next favorite for doctoral research in Library and Information Science in India. GUIDE 123 supervisors have guided only one doctoral degree each so far and 45 persons have supervised two degrees each. 28 persons supervise three doctoral degrees each; eight supervisors have to their credit of being supervising four doctoral degrees each. Nine persons have supervised six degrees each, and three supervisors have guided seven doctoral degrees each. Only two supervisors have the credit of guiding ten doctoral degrees each. Four persons have the credit of guiding 11, 14, 17, 26 doctoral degrees each under their supervision. For 56 doctoral degrees awarded there is no information for the guide in any of the available sources Distribution of Research Supervisor Contributing Doctoral Degrees awarded Sl.No Number of Guides (A) Number of Research Works Supervised (B) Total (AXB) 1 123 1 123 2 45 2 90 3 28 3 84 4 8 4 32 5 10 5 50 6 9 6 54 7 3 7 21 8 4 8 32 9 2 10 20 10 1 11 11 11 1 14 14 12 1 17 17 13 1 26 26 14 N.G 56 56 630 UNIVERSITY - LANGUAGE doctoral theses awarded in regional languages in different universities. Twenty-one doctoral degrees are awarded in Hindi in different Indian Universities. The Jiwaji University has the credit of awarding ten doctoral degrees in Hindi, next followed by Guru Ghasidas and Vikram universities with three each and Pt. Ravishanker Shukla University has awarded two. Shivaji University, University of Burdwan and University of Rajasthan have awarded one each. In Gujrati language M.S. University has awarded one Doctoral thesis. In Bengali Jadhavpur University and University of Burdwan has awarded one each. Shivaji University has awarded one Doctoral thesis in Marathi. the YEAR wise analysis shows distribution of the doctoral degrees awarded during 1985-2005 year wise, the percentage of degrees awarded in each year
